Sponsor Sanctuary Girlie: Cece

Cece joined Hanks Haven at the end of December 2025 and will be a permanent member of our sanctuary family.

Cece is a 1.5-year-old American Bully who was born with microphthalmia and is almost entirely blind, with the ability to see only shadows.

Her past is a heartbreaking one. Cece was born to a backyard breeder where all of her littermates were sold—while she was left behind, tied up and suffering from oozing, infected eyes. She was eventually surrendered to a rescue and listed for adoption, first under the name Josie, and later Cecelia (“Cece”)—a name meaning blind in Latin.

Because of her disability, Cece came dangerously close to being euthanized simply for existing with special needs. In her short life, she has already lived in seven different homes. She has been passed around far too much, and we knew she deserved stability, safety, and unconditional love. A sanctuary setting finally allows Cece to break this cycle and truly settle.

Despite everything she’s endured, Cece is incredibly social and absolutely loves other dogs. She continues to attend weekly daycare with her friends at KNine Care, whose services have been generously donated by her previous foster, Jaden. Cece has this chance because Jaden fiercely advocated for her—seeing her joy, her resilience, and her undeniable will to live despite her disability.

Just one week after coming into our care, Cece experienced a medical emergency. What we initially believed to be a ruptured umbilical hernia turned out to be far more serious. She was rushed to an emergency hospital, where surgery revealed a 7 cm x 4 cm abdominal tumour that had suddenly ruptured her abdominal wall. Most of the tumour was removed, and samples have been sent for testing. While the veterinarian was unable to remove the tumour in its entirety, they are hopeful it will not flare up again for some time.

In just her first week with us, Cece’s care has already exceeded $2,500. While this level of emergency medical care is not expected to be routine, it was a significant and unexpected expense. Moving forward, Cece’s ongoing care includes:

  • Nutritious food and treats (starting at approximately $80 per month)

  • Annual veterinary visits and medical monitoring (starting at approximately $250 per year)

  • Transportation to and from veterinary appointments and daycare

  • Prescription medications as needed

Your support allows us to provide Cece with the safe, comfortable, and love-filled life she has always deserved.

You can make a meaningful difference in her life by donating once or becoming a monthly sponsor to help cover her ongoing care.
